Ashley Forest, North Canterbury - quad bike crash

At about 2.15pm on Saturday the 16th August 2008, the deceased Stephen HALES aged 33 years was taking part in a Canterbury ATV motorbike association hill climb race at the Ashley Forest, North Canterbury.

As he was racing downhill he failed to negotiate a left hand bend, collided with a clay bank and was thrown from his bike.

He was located unconcious and still wearing all of his protective equipment including his helmet.

Attempts were made to recusitate him by both medics and ambulance staff but he failed to regain consciousness and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The event organisers had a permit to use the road at the time and it was closed to all others at the time.
Next of kin have been informed.
