Bus driver catches young would-be robber
Police responded to a report of the attempted aggravated robbery of an 'Orbitor' bus in the Christchurch suburb of Barrington.
A Male Offender is alleged to have presented a knife to the driver and demanded money from the cash box. A short struggle ensured, during which the offender made attempts to strike the driver with the knife. These were unsuccessful and he decamped on foot.
In what was an extremely brave act, the 32-year-old bus driver pursued the Male - apprehending him a short distance away. With the assistance of passers-by, he was held until Police arrived. Noone was injured in the incident.
A 16-year-old Youth is in custody, and will appear in the Christchurch Youth Court on 2 September.
