Wellington City Council is seeking study-grant applications for the next round of the Stanley Banks Bequest, which closes on Tuesday 30 September.

The bequest was left to the Council by Stanley Banks in 1949 to contribute towards the cost of study for children of returned services personnel from the Second World War.

The Council's Grants Manager, Jenny Rains, says the legacy was left in memory of Mr Banks' son, who lost his life while serving in the Second World War.

"Mr Banks wanted to encourage people to study so that they could gain financial independence and develop skills to help the community."

The bequest is administered on behalf of the Council by Heritage Inc., an arm of the RSA. The grants, which are usually between $1000 and $3000, can be for tuition in any subject however the courses must be NZQA-approved.

In order to be eligible for the grant, applicants must:

have a parent who served in the New Zealand Armed Forces in the Second World War
qualify for a community services card
reside in Wellington
show that the money is needed to pay for tuition costs.
Application forms can be obtained from Heritage Inc, PO Box 996, Wellington, or can be downloaded from www.Wellington.govt.nz/services/grants
