Ahipara - Fatal Crash

Around 12.20am this morning a vehicle travelling west towards Ahipara on Kaitaia-Awaroa Road lost control and went into a ditch and collided with a power pole.

There were four occupants in the vehicle and two died at the scene, with a third being airlifted to Whangarei hospital, now on life support in a critical condition.

The Kaitaia Volunteer Fire Brigade assisted in cutting free the victims from the vehicle.

The fourth occupant fled the scene prior to Police and Ambulance arrival and the extent of his injuries, if any is not known.

Next of kin are still being notified and no names will be release until this has been completed.
It is suspected that speed and alcohol were factors in the crash.

Police and the Serious Crash Unit are continuing investigating the crash and believe that no other vehicle are involved.
