Truck crash near Kaikoura

KAIKOURA

A truck which had departed from Christchurch at about 3.00am on Sunday the 28th of September 2008, crashed this morning at approximately 6.20am.
The crash scene is at the Iron Gate stream about 10kms north of Kaikoura on State Highway 1.
The northbound truck has collided with the bridge on that stretch of road.
At the time there were two occupants in the vehicle, the driver was extricated by Kaikoura Volunteer Fire Brigade, he has moderate injuries.
The other occupant has taken longer to cut from the crashed vehicle.
Unfortunately the passenger in this vehicle was found to have died in the crash.
The passenger is a 9 year old boy from Christchurch. Details of the driver and the occupant of the vehicle will not be released until Next of Kin have been advised of this incident.
The driver was taken to Kaikoura Hospital for treatment. He is a 57 year old man from Christchurch.
Heavy lifting machinery is being used to move the vehicle from the crash scene. The state highway was reduced to 1 lane for a period of time while the crash was attended and the vehicle removed.
Serious Crash investigators are at the Kaikoura scene along with staff from the Blenheim Criminal investigation Branch and Kaikoura Police, Fire and Ambulance.
