Intersection Safety Team in Canterbury
This morning (31/10/08) between 7.30 a.m. and 9.00 a.m. the newly established Intersection Safety Team targeted the highest risk intersection in Christchurch, namely Manchester Street and Bealey Avenue.
57 crashes at that intersection in the last 5 years make it our worst equal black spot.
Sergeant Peter Daly and his team found that it is no wonder that intersection is a black spot, given the driving behaviour there.
38 prosecutions arose from the 90 minute operation. Offences ranged from running red and amber traffic lights to failing to wear seatbelts, intersection blocking and various offences committed by cyclists.
The Intersection Safety Team, funded by a recent Government initiative, will continue to focus on high risk intersections and high risk driving.
Drivers can expect little sympathy when stopped for crash promoting offences as police are committed to reducing injuries and the road toll.
