Two of New Zealand’s favourite chefs and food writers are visiting Cromwell on Sunday 16 November for a special brunch hosted by Paper Plus Cromwell, to which to the community is warmly invited. The event, to be held at the Golden Gate Lodge from 11am, will feature Peta Mathias and Fleur Sullivan.

This will be the fifth in a series of author events. In recognition of the support received for the earlier events (featuring top personalities including Garrick Tremain, Tim Shadbolt, Steve Gurney and Kerre Woodham), preference for the $25 tickets will be given via advance notice of ticket sale date to those registered on the email database at the Paper Plus store in Cromwell.

Peta Mathias is a respected chef, author, television presenter and tour host. Her culinary love affair began in Paris, where she lived for a decade and ran her restaurant Rose Blues. She returned to New Zealand in 1990 to cook and write, and has since produced eight popular books about food and travel and established twice-yearly culinary adventures in Morocco and the south of France. Peta also writes a weekly food column for the Herald on Sunday.

Her recently-released book Can we Help it if we’re Fabulous? is an intriguing and entertaining new departure for Peta, where for the first time she shares with women all she has learned through her own experiences and those of the women in her life. With 10 chapters on topics ranging from gastronomy and travel to fashion, love, men and relationships, Peta fills the book with revealing anecdotes and deploys characteristic razor-sharp wit, wisdom and naughtiness.

Restaurateur Fleur Sullivan, the undisputed matriarch of South Island cuisine for 40 years, is the owner of the renowned Fleur’s Place and the writer of the new food and lifestyle book of the same name. When she moved to Moeraki for personal reasons in 1997, she had no intention of starting another restaurant but simply wanted to enjoy the relaxed, coastal lifestyle.

However, finding herself unable to sit back with her feet up, Fleur took advantage of the rugged setting and abundance of high-quality local produce and in 2002 established her award-winning restaurant.

Fleur’s Place is a highly-illustrated book which includes recipes supplied by Fleur and her head chef Simon Peacock. Along with more than 50 recipes, the book features photographs of the spectacular scenery of coastal Otago and the Moeraki area.

Mike and Gai Paardekooper from Paper Plus Cromwell are expecting a full house for the brunch with many locals having fond memories of Fleur from her days at Olivers in Clyde and Peta recognised as one of the preeminent food writers and presenters in New Zealand.

Meanwhile, avid readers are invited to log on to the Paper Plus website, where Paper Plus books spokesperson Kerre Woodham shares her thoughts on her preferred latest books in the Paper Plus Book Club online discussion forum. The Paper Plus Book Club gives readers the opportunity to review books they love, add comments to other reviews and receive special book offers.
