State Highway 11 (SH11) between Kawakawa and Opua in the far North is currently closed due to an oil spill.

Pools of oil are splattered along the 10 kilometre length between the two locations making it hazardous for traffic in both directions.

Vehicles travelling North intending to reach Opua, Paihia or other destinations along SH11 are advised to either delay their travel or; continue North on SH1 until the junction with SH10, turn right onto SH10 and then continue until the junction with SH11 at Puketona Junction, turn right and follow SH11 into Paihia or other intended destinations.

Transit NZ are currently involved in clearing the spills, this is expected to take 2 -3 hours.

Motorists are advised to exercise patience with expected traffic delays in the area.

Further information will be posted when known.
