The two Japanese climbers have been described as 'climbing' companions says Mt Cook staff, rather than the relationship of a guide and client.

The two climbers, Kiyoshi Ikenouchi, and Hideaki Nara, deceased, are family friends. Mr Nara is now in Christchurch Hospital. Mr Ikenouchi's body has been taken to Timaru Hospital for an autopsy.
