In tough times, National Jandal Day hit a new high as Kiwis all over the country dug deep into their pockets to support Surf Life Saving. Lifeguards and collectors flip-flopped their way around the country in jandals on Friday 5th December with collection buckets in hand - raising $300,000 - and proceeds are still pouring in.

“Public support for Surf Life Saving and the role of our Lifeguards in the community is clearly evident by the funds raised this year with proceeds up 15% on the $260,000 collected last year - we are delighted with the result,” says Geoff Barry, CEO Surf Life Saving New Zealand.

“We’re really being hit hard this year with reduced funding coming from all directions, particularly Charity Gaming, so when our national appeal day delivers a good result – it’s one piece of good news for us that is very welcome. We provide an essential service to New Zealanders and we are looking for ways to help make up the financial shortfall that we are experiencing in the current economic climate,” says Barry.

Surf Life Saving clubs all over the country organised collectors for their districts with most clubs arranging community activities to drum up extra support. All the proceeds raised remain in the local area.

Workplaces, schools and community groups got into the jandal spirit with the most popular activity being ‘pimp my jandal’ - resulting in some truly unique jandal creations. Visit www.nationaljandalday.co.nz to view some outstanding kiwi ingenuity.

Surf Life Saving, whose lifesaving service is unique as an outdoor safety service receiving no government funding, is predicting an income drop of close to $3 million this year as a result of Charity Gaming, traditional fundraising and Community Trust support all in decline.
