No drivers over the limit during police operation

Police in Central District are delighted that a major road checkpoint operation found no one who was over the drink-drive limit.

Operation Monty took place on State Highway 3 at Ohakea today (Friday, 19 December) between 3.30pm and 7.30pm with officers stopping and breath-testing all drivers, checking vehicle safety, and identifying other infringements such as issues with registrations, warrants of fitness, bald tyres, and so on.

A total of 2672 drivers were stopped. There were 30 negative breath screening tests, but none of those drivers were over the limit. One motorist received a non-operational order (pink sticker) ordering the car off the road. Two drivers had their licences suspended for excess demerit points, and 63 infringement notices were issued.

Senior Sergeant Kris Burbery said: "Although enforcement is a part of these operations where offences are identified, the main purpose is re-enforcing the road safety message. Christmas is a time when families and friends should be getting together to enjoy themselves and we don't want those festivities marred by avoidable tragedy."

The operation was supported by the Central District Traffic Alcohol Group (Booze Bus), the Commercial Investigation Unit (CVIU) and local police.

Several key road safety partners - ACC, St John Ambulance, Road Safe Central, New Zealand Fire Service from Bulls, Higgins Contractors - were also involved. Bottles of water and packs of roads safety advice were handed out to drivers.

There were in excess of 25 police staff involved.

Senior Sergeant Burbery said: "The operation has been a great success. To stop so many vehicles and find no drink-drivers is fantastic and hopefully an indication that the safety messages are getting through. What was also pleasing was the positive response from the motorists, with so many voicing their support and appreciation for what we were doing."

Road safety operations will continue throughout the festive season and beyond, so motorists are reminded that they could be stopped at any time. All drivers stopped by police will be breath-tested.

• Prepare your vehicle for any travelling - make sure it is roadworthy
• Allow plenty of time to get to your destination - we would rather you get there early than not at all
• Keep to the speed limits
• Don't drink and drive
• Don't drive tired - take plenty of breaks
• Buckle up
• Don't use mobile phones whilst driving
