WELLINGTON CITY

Green MP Keith Locke will speak at a protest in Wellington tomorrow against Israel's military assault on Gaza.

"I will be challenging our government to take a stronger stand against the unprecedented Israeli assault on the people of Gaza, which is causing so many civilian casualties," said Mr Locke, Green Party Foreign Affairs Spokesperson.

"So far our our Foreign Minister, Murray McCully, has only made a general call on both sides to cease fire.

"Much more is required if we are to achieve peace.

"While not absolving Hamas of blame, the main focus should be on stopping the massive Israeli offensive which is killing so many innocent people and destroying much of Gaza's infrastructure.

"It is important for New Zealand to speak out, and not just rely on the United Nations, because the Bush administration is vetoing any effective Security Council measures to stop the war."
