New Plymouth District Council is calling for public comment on its review of the rural environment.

Feedback is being sought on a discussion paper entitled ‘Subdivision and land use in the rural area’.

The paper examines a range of issues, including the effects of development on rural areas of the district, and suggests a number of options for the sustainable management of the rural environment going forward.

Acting Manager Environmental Strategy and Policy Mitchell Dyer says: “The discussion paper represents stage two of the Rural Review – a two-year project that began in August last year.

“In stage one we looked at development in the rural area and its effects on the landscape and character of the environment, and following this we’ve written the discussion paper.

“Now we’re hoping to get as much community feedback as possible on the issues and options we have raised in the paper.”

The discussion paper is open for comments until 27 February, after which those who gave their feedback will be able to speak to the council about their views. The council will then consider the options and decide whether it is necessary to make changes to the District Plan.

If plan changes are required, a further public consultation process will take place to get public feedback on the proposed amendments.

Those keen to have their say can pick up a copy of the discussion paper and comments form from the Civic Centre, Puke Ariki or any of the district libraries. Alternatively people can read the paper and make their comments through the Consultations section of this website.
