North Piha could well have been the scene of yet another tragic drowning today but thanks to Surf Lifeguards - a near tragedy was narrowly avoided.

Surf Lifeguards patrolling the beach at United North Piha on Auckland’s West Coast witnessed a male in his mid-forties floating face down between the flags shortly before 4pm today. Lifeguards retrieved the man’s unconscious body from the water and immediately performed CPR. They worked on him for approximately thirty minutes and managed to successfully resuscitate the man who was then handed over to paramedics in a conscious state.

“This type of incident highlights the skills Surf Lifeguards carry with them, from good vigilance through to providing life saving emergency care. The Lifeguards are to be commended for their quick actions which ultimately saved a life today.” said Dean Storey Northern Region Life Saving Manager.
