Burger King employees held at gunpoint in Manukau
Just before 1:00am this morning as he was taking out the rubbish after the restaurant was closed, an employee of Burger King was confronted by two armed men,
He was forced at gunpoint to return inside where the other three employees were in the process of cleaning.
The two offenders threatened the rest of the employees with firearms, but one was able to contact police who were on the scene within minutes of the call.
Armed uniformed officers, assisted by dog handlers, then surrounded the restaurant.
The employees were moved into a storeroom and threats were made regarding their safety.
The offenders were seen by police outside walking around inside the restaurant with a long barrelled firearm and there are indications a pistol was also used.
One of the employees was released and was able to provide the police with valuable information on the condition of those inside.
After a standoff the other employees were released, and then the two offenders exited the building.
The Armed Offenders Squad was utilised to clear the building and deployed a number of distraction devices.
The employees were unhurt by their ordeal.
Victim support is being offered to the employees, and detectives are currently interviewing two male Auckland residents, aged 22 and 24yrs. They will be appearing at the Manukau District Court later today.
The restaurant has been sealed off pending a thorough scene examination in the morning. Police are confident that the weapons will be located then.
'This was a very stressful situation for my officers and for the victims of this crime. I am glad that it was resolved peacefully' says S/Sgt. Matthews
