Calling all cyclists: We need your help to claim the Cycle-Made City title this weekend.

This Sunday (15 February) is the Bikewise Mayoral Challenge, where cities and towns throughout New Zealand attempt to gain the most points for getting people on a bike.

Every person who turns up earns their town one point, with extra points for engineers, journalists, and elected members and senior managers of councils.

“Locals have always responded well to the Bikewise Mayoral Challenge so I expect we’ll have a large number of young kids, older people and everyone in between turning up at Ngamotu Beach this Sunday,” says Sustainable Transport Coordinator Nathaniel Benefield.

“It’s a great event for all abilities, and just one way that we can promote cycling for leisure and transport in the district.”

The challenge starts at 9am, with participants taking part in a 10-minute cycle ride along the Coastal Walkway before returning to Ngamotu Beach for prizes and giveaways.

The Bikewise Mayoral Challenge is just one event within the month-long Wild West Bike Fest, which still has activities such as Rogaines, orienteering, films, art and other cycle-related events coming up.

“Two of the events in the programme are the Wild West Street Party in New Plymouth’s CBD on Sunday 22 February and a night ride in the Colson Rd forest on Wednesday 25 February, which I’m picking will be very popular,” says Mr Benefield.

More information on the Wild West Bike Fest events is available from council offices and in our Events Calendar.
