MANUKAU CITY

Escaped prisoner Bryce Storm Hughes is back in custody following a police response to information provided by the public. Hughes was arrested in the East Auckland suburb of Bucklands Beach at 10.30pm. Police responded to the Oliver Road area and set up cordons using mobile patrols, Dog Units and the Police Helicopter. Hughes was observed by police and was apprehended after a short chase on foot.
'Police are grateful to members of the public who called in to report suspicious behaviour', said Inspector David Simpson of the Counties Manukau Police. 'That information and some quick and decisive work by police staff has given us a great result', he said.
Hughes has been on the run since the 11th of February when he escaped from the Springhill Prison while on a work party. He was regarded as dangerous to the public.
Hughes will appear in the Manukau District Court on Saturday 14 February on a charge of escaping custody and will be remanded to the Huntly District Court on a date to be set.
