Gisborne and Wairoa Police were kept busy tonight with confrontations between the Mongrel Mob and Black Power gangs.

The incident came in at 11.15pm with twelve 111 calls being received reporting about 40 gang members fighting on Ormond Road in Gisborne.  Gisborne Police arrived and dispersed the group.  No arrests were made.

Several hours later at about 2.00am Wairoa Police were called to Apatu Street where it was reported that about 50-70 gang members were fighting.  The fighting was still going on when Police arrived. Off duty police officers were called out to assist after bottles and other objects were thrown at police.

Several people were injured in the fighting with one male being flown to Hastings Hospital with head injuries.  These are not believed to be life threatening.  The other people suffered minor injuries and have been treated at Wairoa Hospital.  No police were injured.

Wairoa police have arrested two males for fighting and are likely to face further charges before going to court next week.  Police have also identified a number of other offenders and enquiries will be made in the morning to locate these people.

It is not thought that these two incidents were related.
