Double Fatal Crash State Highway One in Northland District, 3:20pm

Police are investigating a double fatal crash on State Highway One, near the summit of the Brynderwyn's, Waipu. At about 1.34pm a southbound Nissan Sunny car has lost control and spun around, crossing the centre line, colliding into a northbound Holden Commodore car.

The passenger's side of the Nissan impacted the front of the northbound Commodore.

Both the female driver and female front seat passenger of the Nissan were killed instantly.

Both front seat airbags in the Holden were deployed and the driver and front seat passenger both received minor injuries.

The crash occurred on a stretch of road with a single northbound and two southbound lanes.

One lane remains clear and traffic is flowing, but there will be significant delays for a further 3 hours, whilst the Serious Crash Unit carries out scene examinations.

Police request that members of the public delay their travel in this area, and exercise patience if caught up the backlog.
