Fatal crash near Roxburgh, strobe lights stolen

ROXBURGH

Police, fire and ambulance attended a fatal head on vehicle crash at 1015pm, 7th March on State highway 8 Ettrick.
It was established that a white Toyota car was travelling from Roxburgh towards Dunedin with 2 male occupants, aged in their 50's.
Travelling in the opposite direction was a Toyota Hiace van driven by a overseas national working in the Roxburgh area fruit picking.
One of the vehicles has crossed onto the incorrect side of the road colliding head on with the other vehicle.
The passenger in the Toyota car received serious injuries and died at the scene.
The driver of the Hiace van was processed for drink driving and is in custody waiting to appear in the Dunedin district court on Monday 9th March for 'Driving while incapable'. Further charges are likely to be made.
A scene examination will be completed today.
The road was blocked overnight with a detour in place.
While police staff were dealing with this crash, two Invercargill males aged in their 30's stole 2 strobe warning lights from the scene. These lights were to warn motorist's. The theft of the lights put emergency services and the public at risk.
Both males were located in Invercargill today (8th March) and have been charged with theft. They will appear in the Invercargill district court on Friday 13th March 2009.
