Greta Knarston (Counties Manukau) has had a very strong performance at the JWOC long distance to place 16th, earning herself her second top-20 result in just as many days.

Backing up from her 19th performance yesterday in the sprint distance, Knarston found herself caught up by 2 minutes on the course by Alena Trapeznikova from Russia. These two formed a strong combination out in the granite terrain and stormed through the rest of the course together. Knarston got away near the end, coming in for an early placing of 3rd, with much of the field still to run.

Much of the interest in the girls field was on Australian Vanessa Round, who had a lead early on in the race. Round was favoured to do well in the granite terrain, which proved to be a good bet. Round ended up placing sixth, for her first ever podium place at a JWOC.

Kate Morrison (Hawkes Bay) had a solid performance in her JWOC debut to place 46th, just over three minutes behind the experienced Lizzie Ingham (Wellington) who placed 42nd.

Thomas Reynolds (North West) backed up with a reasonable performance in the mens grade. Reynolds quoted that it was a "reality check" to find just how tough the competition is in the long distance, as Reynolds has traditionally found the going pretty easy in New Zealand. Reynolds was the top placed kiwi in 63rd position, over 19 minutes behind Olav Lundanes from Norway.

The teams have a rest day on Tuesday, which is then followed on Wednesday by the middle distance qualifications in the same granite terrain. Spectators of the event that are participating in the Western Plains Carnival are running on Tuesday on the same area as that used today.
