Fatal crash near Balclutha

Incident type: Fatal Crash Owaka Highway

At approximately 8.50pm on Thursday the 19th of March 2009 there was a fatal crash involving two vehicles near the Finegand Freezing Works on the Balclutha - Owaka Highway, Balclutha.
The single occupant from one vehicle, a male, was deceased at the scene. There were 5 occupants in the second vehicle; all have been transferred to the Dunedin Public Hospital. 2 sustained critical injuries while 3 others sustained serious injury.
The road is currently closed. Traffic diversion is in place through Gray Road, Freezing Works Road into Kakapuaka Road.
Police Photography and Serious Crash Unit staff will be attending the scene.
At this time it is not known what has caused the crash or what were the contributing factors. Further examination of both the scene and the vehicles will take place tomorrow.
