As part of Earth Hour 2009, the Taupo AC Baths and the Events Centre will be giving away free eco bulbs, thanks to Energymad.

Energymad have supplied the two Taupo venues with hundreds of eco bulbs to pass onto their customers, encouraging them to replace standard light bulbs with energy saving bulbs. Eco bulbs don’t require as much energy as standard bulbs and last up to 10,000 hours, so don’t require replacing as often and have the added bonus of keeping people’s power bills down.

Earth Hour 2009 is being held this Saturday, 28 March from 8.30 – 9.30pm and aims to reach 1 billion people in 1,000 cities. This year Taupo is one of almost 40 cities or towns around New Zealand who have committed to Earth Hour 2009 by turning of lights and appliances for 1 hour to support action on climate change.

Earth Hour is a global call to action for every individual, business and community to stand up, take responsibility and get involved with working towards a sustainable future. Taupo District Council is supporting Earth Hour 2009 and will be turning off as many lights and appliances as possible throughout Council owned facilities. Councillor Kathryn Uvhagen says switching off is a simple action that can make a real difference. “I encourage everyone to turn off their lights and appliances for Earth Hour this Saturday. It is great to hear some of our local businesses will be getting behind Earth Hour 2009 - thank you to Bond Bar and to Thai Delight for supporting this worthy cause.”
