HAMILTON

8:20pm 27 March 2009

Crash investigators are currently at the scene of a single vehicle car crash that has closed SH1 at Horotiu north of Hamilton this evening.

Sergeant Juliet Burgess of the Huntly Strategic Traffic Unit said emergency services were called to the scene of the crash, near the intersection of SH1 & Bern Rd about 6.30pm.

"A male occupant of the northbound car was killed in the crash while a woman was taken to Waikato Hospital by ambulance with serious injuries. At this stage we believe the pair to be a married couple but that is subject to confirmation.

"At this stage it's too early to comment on who was the driver or what caused the crash."

SH1 is currently closed and is expected to remain so for some time as the Waikato Serious Crash Unit carry out their investigation.

Diversions are in place for southbound traffic at Horotiu Bridge Rd and Te Kowhai Rd for northbound.

Updated information will be made available tomorrow morning.
