Olav Lundanes (Norway) took his second gold medal of the Junior World Championships when he took out the middle distance race on Thursday. After an early wobble, he was in a tight battle with Petter Eriksson (Sweden) most of the way. The 16th control was decisive. Lundanes gained 27 seconds on Eriksson there, stretching a lead which had been in single digits to its eventual comfortable 44 seconds. Martin Hubmann (Switzerland) took the bronze after being the leader at the finish for some time.

The women’s race was completely dominated by Jenny Lonnkvist (Sweden). She was already nearly a minute up on the field by 5, and never let her grip on the race go. When she came in she was more than two minutes clear of the field, and whilst Ida Marie Bjorgul (Norway) made some impression on that, she never looked like challenging Lonnkvist’s time. The Swede was 1.34 ahead at the end. Bjorgul took the silver, whilst there was a tie for the bronze between Saila Kinni (Finland) and Tatyana Mendel (Russia) after a tight contest throughout.
