NEW ZEALAND RESEARCH & EDUCATION NETWORK PRAISED BY LEADING INTERNATIONAL AUTHORITY

One of the world’s leading developers of next-generation fibre networks and business models has singled out a New Zealand study as one of the most comprehensive and in-depth studies he has seen on the subject.

Bill St Arnaud praised the recently-published work on the value of advanced networks for the New Zealand economy by the Research and Education Advanced Network of NZ (REANNZ), calling it “one of the most comprehensive and in-depth studies I have seen on the subject.”

The study was undertaken by high-end investment consultancy Temple: Capital Investment Specialists, and shows that the biggest impact from an advanced network is the dissemination of skills from the people it touches.

“What surprised us as we did the value study was that the real benefit comes from the people who touch an advanced network taking it back to their communities and driving up demand for advanced applications and systems,” said Dr. Paul Winton of Temple.

“One example in Australia shows that kids who were exposed to leading-edge technology were one of the biggest drivers of adoption in the home – essentially the kids demanded at home the tools they used every day at school.

“This has big implications for governments, in particular around the need to ensure they feed the demand side through advanced school and research networks as they roll out higher speed broadband networks.

“If the government ever wanted to make sure it was getting the most out of broadband investment in New Zealand then they could do a lot worse than committing a small amount of investment in advanced networks and the infrastructure to use it in schools and research organizations around the country.”
