Auckland Dominates Badminton Champs In Wellington

WELLINGTON CITY

Auckland players have sent out an early indicator of form for the season by dominating the inaugural New Zealand under 23 badminton championships held in Wellington.

Auckland fielded a full strength team which featured numerous international players including Henry Tam, Kevin Dennerly-Minturn, Delius Tang and the Chapple sisters, Clare and Emma. Such was the domination of Auckland that their worst result was an 8-3 victor over Waitakere.

In second place was Northern Districts which had several Waikato players in the side led by Kiwi international Oliver Leydon-Davis and Bjorn Seguin.

Mainland comprising of all south island regions with James Eunson and Anna Rankin as their top singles players were third.

The U23 individual championships start on Saturday evening finishing off on Easter Monday.

Seguin is the men’s top seed in singles ahead of Eunson with Waitakere’s Luke Charlesworth and Michael Fowke(Waikato) also seeded while Clare Chapple and Rankin are the women’s singles top seeds.

Auckland bt Waitakere 8-3, Northern Districts bt Mainland 6-5, Central bt North 6-5, Auckland bt Central 11-0, Northern Districts bt Waitakere 7-4, Mainland bt North 10-1, Auckland bt North 11-0, Mainland bt Waitakere 6-5, North Districts bt Central 7-4, Auckland bt Northern Districts 9-2, Mainland bt Central 10-1, Waitakere bt North 10-1, Auckland bt Mainland 10-1, Northern Districts bt North 10-1, Waitakere bt Central 10-1.

Final placings: Auckland 1, Northern Districts 2, Mainland 3, Waitakere 4, Central 5, North 6.
