Fatal crash in Central District, 3:00am

Emergency services have been in attendance at a fatal motorcycle crash tonight in which a 28 year old male was killed.

The incident, which happened on Wiremu Road, near Okato in the Taranaki District, occurred just before midnight last night when the victim's motorbike left the road and skidded into a nearby stream.

The victim was located shortly after the incident and worked on at the scene by ambulance staff but was pronounced dead not long after.

A second motorcyclist who was with the victim at the time of the accident is believed to have left the scene shortly after the crash. Police are keen to speak to this person as soon as possible.

They also wish to hear from any member of the public who may have been passed by one or more motorcyclists north bound on or near Wiremu Road prior to midnight on the 17th April.

The name of the victim is not available for release as next of kin are yet to be informed.
