Firearms incident in Bay of Plenty District, 3:30pm

About 3.19 pm staff at Tauranga Hospital reported that there was a person with a hand gun in an office with a doctor. The doctor exited the office a short time later and reported he believed the gun was real and that the person was very upset.

Police attended on the hospital grounds and established observations on the building where the person with the gun was.

They also evacuated the building that the person with the gun was in, as well as the surrounding buildings.
The Armed Offender Squad also attended at the scene.

Police negotiators established contact with the person with the gun and he gave himself up to police at 4.41 pm.
