HAMILTON

Hamilton Central Library will be far from its quiet self later this month, when alternative rock/metal band Chuganaut performs as part of its New Zealand Music Month initiative 'Soundz Like Hamilton'.

The one-off free concert will be held in Hamilton Central Library on Saturday, 30 May at 3pm as part of a two-week programme of music, which aims to promote local talent while providing a wide variety of entertainment to caters to all tastes.

By far the biggest band to ever perform as part of Soundz Like Hamilton, Chuganaut stole the national spotlight earlier this year when it opened for British heavy metal legends Iron Maiden during its concert at Mt Smart Stadium, Auckland. The Hamilton band was originally formed in 2002 and quickly went on to scoop 'Peoples Choice', 'Most Outstanding Guitarist' and 'Most Outstanding Drummer' awards at the 2003 Woodstock Blue Battle of the Bands, win the title of 'Worldwide Winners' at World Battle of the Bands in 2004, and open Auckland's Big Day Out in 2005.

Hamilton City Libraries Community Programmes Manager Fiona Johnson said while there were always expectations that this year's Soundz Like Hamilton event would be the best one yet, no one anticipated that such a well-known band would steal the show.

"This is the fifth year that Soundz Like Hamilton will be held and each year the event gets bigger and better. Chuganaut is a prime example of a Hamilton band making it big in the music industry, so it is great that they want to get involved with this local celebration of music.

"While most people automatically think of libraries as being quiet places, I can guarantee this won't be the case when Chuganaut takes to the stage – their performances are described as 'alternative rock with a twist of metal, an explosive mix of spontaneity, monstrous musicianship and four great characteristic personalities'. The wonderful contradiction of an alternative rock/metal band performing in a library will definitely be something unique for people to experience."

While the Chuganaut concert is free, spaces are strictly limited. Those wanting to secure their spot for the hour-long concert can collect tickets from the information desk on level two of Hamilton Central Library.
