Threats in Counties Manukau District
The New Zealand Police are presently investigating a large number of phone calls that have been made to Chinese businesses in the wider Auckland area.
The caller claims to be part of an Asian gang and demands a sum of money, sometimes alleging these funds are needed in order to assist some needy associates. The caller may also mention firearms and claim to have people watching the premises concerned.
These calls appear to come from an overseas location and Police believe they are a scam to try and swindle money from frightened locals into foreign bank accounts. These telephone calls mirror similar incidents that have occurred in Canada and the United States, Police inquiries are continuing with authorities in Asia to try and identify the culprits.
People receiving these calls are advised to:
1. Note all relevant details.

3. Refrain from meeting any payment demands,
4. If warranted, report the matter as soon as practicable to their local Police station, and
5. Observe basic safety precautions where applicable.
Where there are other aggravating factors and a person has genuine reason to fear for their immediate safety they should contact the Police immediately.
The Police would like to hear from any person who knows or who can assist with identifying the person or people responsible for these calls.
