Fatal train v pedestrian in Tauranga

TAURANGA

Tauranga Police are investigating the death of a pedestrian who was struck by a train at about 12.30pm on Sunday the 31st of May 2009. The accident occurred on Maunganui Road on a straight stretch of track. No vehicle was involved nor is there a level crossing at that location.
Senior Sergeant Rob Glencross of the Tauranga Police said that witness accounts suggest that the man stepped in front of the train without looking.
The man is yet to be identified and is described as a male European in his 60's or 70's, wearing a white faced Seiko analogue watch, and a cap.
Victim support are assisting with the driver of the train and the witnesses. Police are keen to hear from anyone with information that might assist in identifying the deceased and anyone who might have witnessed the death.
