Nelson Police have completed their investigation into an assault complaint made against Dr Nick Smith, MP for Nelson, and have found there is no justification for the complaint.
Dr Smith provided police with a statement today in which he denied any assault had taken place. A number of witnesses have been spoken to, who confirmed that the agitated complainant was acting in a loud and aggressive manner towards Dr Smith over his power bills, and that he was trying to prevent Dr Smith from closing the door of his vehicle and driving away.
The complainant is known to Dr Smith, whom he has previously tried to assist but who has repeatedly abused and intimidated his electoral office staff over a period of a decade.
Police are attempting to resolve the matter by a scheduled meeting between the complainant and Dr Smith at the earliest opportunity.
