End of an Era at Todd Energy Aquatic Centre
After 23 years of fun and screams from adults and children alike, the outdoor hydroslides at the Todd Energy Aquatic Centre will start to be removed today.
The four slides will take up to two weeks to dismantle, after which the site will be converted to green space.
The seasonal slides have been replaced by two indoor hydroslides, which have seen about 50,000 rides since they opened inside the aquatic centre in mid-April.
“A lot of people have grown up with these outdoor hydroslides so their removal definitely marks the end of an era at the aquatic centre, and the start of a new one with the year-round slides being really busy,” says Manager Aquatic Recreation Operations Mike Roberts.
The outdoor slides were installed in 1986, having being shipped here from the Parnell Baths in Auckland.
The section of the Coastal Walkway in front of the aquatic centre will be closed for a few hours one day during the coming fortnight, when some of the tallest sections of the slides are removed. Temporary diversions will be in place during this time.
