WELLINGTON

Police are keeping an open mind about what caused a fire at a Titahi Bay address in the early hours of Monday 20 July. The fire is the second incident in as many days, occurring at the scene of a recent double homicide.

On Monday morning the Morere Street house was well ablaze when Police arrived. The fire caused extensive damage to the roof.

Detective Sergeant Shane Rongonui says it is too early to say what caused the fires but he is not discounting a re-ignition of Sunday morning’s fire.

Earlier in the day the house, which was empty of property, was boarded up and secured. Demolition crews are now checking the dwelling for the presence of asbestos before proceeding to demolish the house. Power and water supplies have been disconnected and large barriers are in place for public safety reasons until further notice.

A number of people are helping Police with the investigation.

Police were first called to a fire at the address on Sunday 19 July at around 7am. Police found the property well ablaze and the fire appeared to have been deliberately started.

Anyone who may have any information should contact Detective Sergeant Shane RONGONUI at the Porirua Police Station, phone 238 1400.
