Swanepoel falls short of first final at FINA World Champs

updated - Swanepoel fell short of the final after finishing 15th in the semi-finals with a slightly slower time than his heat in 23,50.

Olympic finalist Corney Swanepoel has made the semi-final cut in the 50 Fly today, coming in 13th, and will race again this morning at the FINA world champs in Rome.

Three other Kiwis swam in the first heats session with Moss Burmester and Glenn Snyders both ranking 26th in their respective 400 Free and 100 Breast.

Danile Bell also raced in the 50 Fly but came in .36sec behind Swanepoel to miss the cut in 26th place.

The first heats session saw 13 event records broken with the men's 4x100 Free relay seeing the world record broken 3 heats in a row.

Swanepoel raced from lane 1 in the first of two semi-finals which will replay on Sky Sport channel 32 at approx 9:50am NZT.

World records broken

American Ariana Kukors set a new WR of 2:07.03 in the Women’s 200m Medley, over the previous record by Stephanie Rice (2:08.45).

Federica Pellegrini of Italy has broken her own World record to swim 3:59.15 in the 400 Free in an event she has dominated for more than 4 years.

Paul Biedermann from Germany set a new World record of: 3:40.07 over Ian Thorpe's old mark by .01sec.

Sarah Sjostrom: swam 56.44 smashing Inge de Bruijn's world record in the Women’s 100m Butterfly Semifinal.
