Burmester started the race strong, but finished sixth in his semi in 1:56.03.

Burmester was not joined in the semis by fellow Kiwi Glenn Snyders who swam a 28th placed 27.73 in the 50 Breaststroke.

Michael Phelps was beaten in the 200m Freestyle, where a German Paul Biedermann set a new world record. Phelps is now at risk of leaving the event without and individual medal, however a favourite, his 200 fly will be swum tonight.
