Couple who intervened in Cambridge stabbing sought by Police

Waikato detectives investigating the random knife attack on two men in the town overnight are appealing for an African couple who witnessed the attack to come forward.

Detective Scott McDougall of the Cambridge CIB said a witness to the attack, which happened about 11.20pm recalls clearly the actions of a man and a woman.

"They were sitting on a park bench opposite the town hall on the park side of Victoria St when the attack happened.

"The witness said the couple were of North African descent, describing them as male and female Somalis aged in their twenties who physically intervened in the attack."

Mr McDougall said it was important for the investigation team to speak to the couple to get down what they saw and to also acknowledge their actions.

The inquiry has had good progress this morning with Police recovering blood stained clothing and a knife from the offender's home.

Meanwhile the 31-year-old stabbing victim underwent surgery this morning at Waikato Hospital.

His 34-year-old friend is currently described as being in a stable condition in the hospital's High Dependency Unit.

Neither victim knew their attacker.
