WELLINGTON CITY

Police are appealing for witnesses and any information concerning a cowardly Indecent Assault that occurred around 4am on Sunday 2nd August 2009 in Arlington Street, Wellington.

Detective Sergeant Damian MURPHY of Wellington police said "The 20 year old female victim was walking home alone. She walked down along Cuba Street, across Webb Street into Torrens Terrace. She turned right from Torrens Terrace into Arlington Street and was walking along the middle of the road in Arlington Street when she was attacked from behind by a lone male attacker ".

"The cowardly male grabbed the young woman around her neck. The victim bravely retaliated by punching the male in the face but the offender overpowered her and pulled the victim to the ground where he indecently assaulted her ".

"The victim's screams caused the offender to run off along Arlington Street. He was last seen running fast down Torrens Terrace towards Webb Street".

The offender is described as;

A Pacific Island male aged 20 to 25 years old with a small build who was wearing a black hoodie and jeans.

Detective Sergeant MURPHY said "The cowardly male did not speak during the attack. This young woman was indecently assaulted in the middle of the street in a completely unprovoked attack. A number of people were in the area and Police are appealing to those people to come forward".

Detective Sergeant MURPHY said "The victim's screams caused a number of neighbors from nearby houses to come out of their houses. Police want to hear from these people, anyone who witnessed the incident and anyone who saw the offender in the area".
