Women charged with assault of dead 2 year old child in Kaitaia

Police are continuing with a homicide investigation into this matter.

A Post Mortem examination will be conducted on Monday which will help to determine the exact cause of death.

Police are conducting a detailed examination of the home address of the deceased which is 21 Miro Place, Kaitaia.

There are still a significant number of friends and family to be spoken to in getting a detailed background picture of the environment the deceased and her family lived in.

At this stage police are still establishing exactly who is in the wider family and won't be releasing any names until we are sure all the family have been advised. This is a tragic time for the family and we will be respecting the need for the family to have time to cope with what has happened.

Police have spoken to some of the family members of the deceased who have been co-operative and we will continue to conduct enquiries with the immediate family in an attempt to piece together exactly what has occurred.

At this time a 32 year old woman has been charged with assault on the deceased and she will appear in the Auckland District Court on Monday in relation to this charge.
