Te Waka Toi appointments announced

Minister for Arts Culture and Heritage Christopher Finlayson today announced new appointments to the board of Te Waka Toi.


Te Waka Toi, the Mori Arts Board of Creative New Zealand, is responsible for developing Mori arts and artists through delivering contestable funding, and development initiatives.


Darrin Haimona (Tainui), the new chairman of the board, has been reappointed to the board for a three year term. He is also the Chief Executive Officer of Te Hauora O Ngati Haua Trust. Darrin has also been involved in Mori performing arts and is responsible for establishing and managing a local iwi arts management plan, composing, performing and producing music, and directing musical productions.


Mr Haimona has also worked on community housing and non-violence networks and has considerable links with Mori communities in Waikato. He has been a member of the board since July 2006.


Nathan Gray (Ngai Tahu, Rangitaane, and Waikato whangai), a new appointment to the board, has a varied background in writing, marketing, and communications. He also undertook a range of roles in legal research and law clerking.


Matanuku Mahuika (Ngati Porou and Ngati Raukawa), also a new appointment to the board, is a partner in Kahui Legal. He specialises in advising Mori trust boards and Mori organisations in structural, business development. His work is in the area of intellectual property, in particular in relation to the recognition given to Mori cultural and spiritual beliefs.


Mr Gray and Mr Mahuika have both been appointed for three year terms, effective from 1 July.
