On Monday 24th August 2009, the Police were notified that three youths from the Ruatoki Valley were missing in the bush behind Ruatoki while pig hunting. They had been expected out on Sunday afternoon.

As a result a Search and Rescue Operation was initiated.

At about 9.30 am today, the three were located by ground personnel from the Whakatane Land Search and rescue group and airlifted out by RNZAF Helicopter.

They were found hungry and well with no injuries.

About 40 personnel from Tauranga Search and Rescue and Whakatane Land Search and Rescue were involved in the search. Local helicopter operators and RNZAF No3 Squadron assisted with transport into a difficult terrain.

Police would like to thank the Whanau and Hapu of the youths for their assistance with providing a base for the operation and feeding the personnel involved.
