CHRISTCHURCH

This evening, at about 6.40 p.m. Police were in Oliviers Road Christchurch attending an incident when they found a male lying on the side of the road with two people standing with him.

An officer called for an Ambulance and then rendered immediate medical assistance after he found that the victim had received a number of stab wounds. The victim died in the Ambulance on the way to the hospital.

An area of Oliviers Road between from about 40 to 70 Oliviers Road has been cordoned off and is currently being examined. The cordon will remain in place there at least for the next day.

Police are speaking to a number of people that have information about the death. A male has been arrested and charged with assault on the victim and will appear in the Christchurch District Court tomorrow morning.

The victim is believed to be a 41 year old male who lived locally. His immediate family has been advised but we will not release his name until the morning as they are still trying to contact an immediate family member.

Police have been speaking to people who live in Oliviers Road this evening and we will be continuing with that tomorrow. We obviously want to speak to anyone that might have been travelling along Oliviers Road around 6.30 p.m. this evening and may have seen an altercation between two males.

Anyone who has information to provide is asked to contact the Chch Central Police Station and ask to speak to the Central City Investigation Unit.

I intend to make a further release in the morning in relation to the investigation.
