Reids Line East, Bunnythorpe crash investigation

MANAWATU-WHANGANUI

Fielding Police are currently investigating a motor vehicle crash that occurred on Reids Line East, Bunnythorpe at approximately 9.00am this morning in which an 84 year old pedestrian was struck by a west bound Ford Falcon Ute.

The pedestrian was transported to hospital by ambulance but subsequently died as a result of injuries received in the crash.

The driver of the vehicle involved stopped and contacted emergency services but had left the scene prior to the arrival of police. He has subsequently contacted the police and is assisting with the investigation of the matter.

Initial enquiries suggest that the victim may have been in the process of retrieving his mail from a rural mail box when struck by the vehicle.

The crash scene has been examined by the Serious Crash Unit and police have spoken to a number of witnesses who were in the vicinity of the crash.

The investigation of this matter will seek to ascertain the actions of the driver of the vehicle leading up to and immediately after the crash as well as examining the actions of the pedestrian.

It is expected that this investigation will take a number of weeks to complete.

The Police are not yet in a position to release the name of the deceased
