Tauranga Police are continuing to work with Port officials and relevant authorities in relation to the boarding of a ship, the East Ambition, in Tauranga Harbour by Greenpeace.

Tauranga Area Commander, Inspector Mike Clement, says police staff are on board the ship and are in discussions with Greenpeace.

He says that Police have removed and arrested two protesters – one who was on the ladder of the ship and the other who had been secured to the anchor chain.

There are believed to be 17 protestors in total – 14 on board the East Ambition, and three supporting in an RIB vessel.

“It is a peaceful protest, but there are significant safety concerns for protestors and emergency personnel alike. Safety is a key element in any steps we take,” says Inspector Clement.

“While we hold no immediate concerns for the safety of anyone involved, we are dealing with a marine environment and height considerations, and therefore keeping people safe is our principle concern.”

Further updates will be provided as the situation develops.
