A new village green has been created by a Far North Holdings Ltd at Opua.

The open public space has been landscaped and developed on the site of the former Opua Cruising Club building on the waterfront.

With land a scarce resource at Opua the creation of an additional passive recreation area is a welcome addition to the port community's amenities. The site is immediately adjacent to the water and has been landscaped to promote spectacular views of the port and Waikere Inlet.

The total project has cost in excess of $40,000 and includes new seating, plantings, lawns and a petanque court.

Far North Holdings Ltd adopted the concept in its development plan for the area some time ago, in response to local community aspirations to have an area of open space in this part of the busy port area.

"The new village green now complements the esplanade reserve adjacent to the marina development further west in the Opua marine park estate," company chairman Tony Norman says.

“The village green is in a high profile central spot accessible to all visitors whether they arrive by boat or by land. The newly developed space has already been well utilised and we have enjoyed positive feedback from the public.”

He says the project completes another step forward in the company's ongoing programme of new infrastructural development at Opua.
