Police are urging a man claiming to have explosives inside a bus at Napier's Travel Centre to give himself up.

Negotiators, Armed Offenders Squad staff and other police have cordoned off Travel Centre area in Munroe Street, including 15 houses.

Police say the situation is contained and calm. The man, who was a passenger on a late morning bus service from Hastings, has claimed to have explosives but it is not known if this is the case. NZDF explosives staff have been advised as a precautionary measure.

A police team has arranged for people who have parked their cars in a commuter carpark near the travel centre to collect their vehicles. Drivers can meet police at the corner of Munroe and Raffles Street with access from the Station Street end.

The man is alone inside the bus which is parked outside the travel centre. Passengers and others who were in the area at the time have been safely evacuated without incident.
