Promoters of the David Tua/Shane Cameron heavyweight boxing bout in Hamilton tomorrow (Saturday) night have rubbished claims that one of the boxers may be given an opportunity to claim an easy way out for a draw, if a cut forces the stoppage of the long-awaited bout.

Duco Events’ David Higgins described the suggestion by some media as “absolute nonsense”.

“The rules of the fight provide for the referee to step in should a serious cut prevent a fighter answering the bell to begin the sixth round. There is no easy way out or “failsafe provision” for a draw as some media have reported,” he said.

“The fact is that only a cut so serious as to threaten blindness or the prospect of grievous harm to a fighter before the sixth round begins can lead to a stoppage,” said Higgins.

“The fact is neither Cameron nor Tua have ever had a fight stopped due to a cut in their entire careers.”

“Obviously most of the media understand the basic rules of boxing but one has taken a completely erroneous inference from referee Bruce McTavish’s briefing today,” said Higgins.

“This fight will see the best man win and there will be no easy out for either boxer.”
