NZ stars shine on opening night of pool champs

New Zealand team members Glenn Anderson and Steven Kent displayed their class during the opening session of the New Zealand surf lifesaving swimming championships in Wellington tonight.

Anderson (New Plymouth Old Boys) blitzed the 200m super lifesaver field, clocking 2mins 13.46secs to finish an incredible 13secs ahead of second-placed Kent (Titahi Bay).

Kent, who has dominated the event over the past two years, was a second ahead of Australian Dev Lahey, although he fought back later in the evening to win the 100m manikin carry with fins.
Kent finished that event in 54.54secs, just 0.26secs ahead of Anderson, with Titahi Bay teenager John Gatfield grabbing third.

Australian Natalie Glossat was too strong in the women's 200m super lifesaver, squeaking home ahead of compatriot Miranda Bell, with New Plymouth's Ayla Dunlop-Barrett third.

Like her national squad teammate Kent, Dunlop-Barrett also enacted revenge in the 100m manikin carry, however, heading off promising Orewa ironwoman Rachel Clarke, with Jamie-Lee Reynold (New Plymouth Old Boys) third.
