MANAWATU-WHANGANUI

At about 10.40 this morning Police located Wanganui man David Bourke who has been evading arrest since allegedly shooting a farm worker in Norsewood mid-afternoon on Sunday.

Mr Bourke was found in a toilet block at the Norsewood Golf Club. This is within the cordoned area. He was apprehended by members of the Armed Offenders Squad.

Central District Commander Russell Gibson said Mr Bourke was believed to be suffering from hypothermia but appeared to otherwise be unhurt. Medical treatment has been sought for Mr Bourke.

"When he was found, he had a shotgun, which I understand was presented at the AOS officers, after a brief struggle he was taken into custody without any shots being fired," Superintendent Gibson said.

"I am proud of my staff, of the professionalism and dedication that they have displayed over the past 48 hours. That Mr Bourke was able to be arrested despite a firearm being presented at the officers is a testament to their courage and ability.

"We were always quietly confident that we would find Mr Bourke, within our cordons, and we are pleased to have found him alive as we a have a number of questions in relation to the last couple of days that we need to talk to him about."

Mr Gibson said with the apprehension of David, one part of police activities had finished but the investigation is in its infancy.

He said police are appealing to the public to report any sightings of David Bourke from the time he left Wanganui early Sunday morning till he was captured today in Norsewood. We are particularly interested in his movements on the Sunday morning. He was driving a green Honda Rafaga saloon car registration XP 9885.

The homicide inquiry into the dead man in the green Honda is ongoing. His identity remains unknown but Mr Gibson was hopeful it would known later today. The post mortem is being conducted in Wellington this morning.

Police have a number of witnesses to speak to who remained within the cordon for the last two days.

"We have been grateful for the hospitality shown by the local community in the past two days. This is heartland New Zealand at its very best. A great community.

"We are also mindful this has been an inconvenience for those farmers unable to tend to their stock and while we apologise for that, safety always has to be the priority in situations where there is a potentially dangerous and armed offender."
